Higher Education and CPA Levels Within Client Accounting Services (CAS) / Outsourced Accounting (OA) Teams [Survey Data]

In Vic .ai’s recent survey of Client Accounting Services and Outsourced Accounting firms, we asked participants how many team members have bachelor’s degrees in accounting, how many team members have master’s degrees in accounting, and what percentage of the team are CPAs.

The following is an excerpt from our report, The State of Client Accounting Services and Outsourced Accounting.

What percentage of your CAS/OA team has a bachelor's degree in accounting (or equivalent)?

With national debate intensifying about the costs of college degrees and accompanying debt following graduation, participants were asked about the percentage of their CAS/OA team holding a bachelor's degree in accounting (or equivalent).

Participants selected from among four choices:

  • Most have bachelor's degrees in accounting (or equivalent) (More than 80%)
  • The majority have bachelor's degrees in accounting (or equivalent) (50%-79%)
  • Some have bachelor's degrees in accounting (or equivalent) (20%-49%)
  • Most don't have bachelor's degrees in accounting (or equivalent) (Less than 20%)

72% of participants work on CAS/OA teams where the majority or most of their team members have a bachelor's degree in accounting (or equivalent).

Only 12% of participants responded that most of their team members do not have a bachelor's degree in accounting (or equivalent).

What percentage of your CAS/OA team has a master's degree in accounting (or equivalent)?

With the knowledge that most participants work on CAS/OA teams where the majority or most of their team members have a bachelor's degree in accounting (or equivalent), what about master's degrees in accounting (or equivalent)?

That appears to be where a significant drop-off occurs.  58% of participants work on CAS/OA teams where most don’t have master's degrees in accounting. Only 16% of participants are part of CAS/OA teams where the majority or most have master's degrees in accounting.

What percentage of your CAS/OA team are CPAs?

Following along the same lines of discovering how often CAS/OA teams have employees with bachelor's degrees in accounting (or equivalent) or master's degrees in accounting (or equivalent), participants addressed the question of the CPA credential.

It turns out that only 20% of participants are on CAS/OA teams where the majority or most are CPAs.

80% of participants are on CAS/OA teams where relatively few employees are CPAs -- split right down the middle between:

  • Some are CPAs (20%-49%)
  • Most aren't CPAs (Less than 20%)

In this article, you’ve learned how many team members have bachelor’s degrees in accounting, how many team members have master’s degrees in accounting, and what percentage of the team are CPAs from Vic .ai’s recent survey of Client Accounting Services and Outsourced Accounting firms.
